Student Stories

A view of our courses through the eyes of our students.

Anne’s Story.

Having worked for more than 10 years as a Family Solicitor in Leeds and with two young children, I knew I wanted a lifestyle change. My husband worked away a lot and I felt like a single mum juggling work, children and marriage. I knew that something had to give.

I wanted a career where I was still helping people. I always loved the client care aspect of being a lawyer but I found so many other parts of it draining, not to mention, stressful.  I wanted do something that generated more positivity and where I felt appreciated for all my hard work.

I was also desperate to be a good mum and be there for my children. I had a history of recurrent miscarriage and was having regular Reflexology. I was pretty stressed out at the time, but after around 6 months of amazing Reflexology from a lovely lady (an ex student of Pippa James) I fell pregnant.  I continued to have Reflexology throughout my pregnancy.  I knew I didn’t want to return to working as a lawyer, and when I was driving away from one of my Reflexology treatments I literally had a ‘light bulb’ moment where I thought, I might be quite good at this.  I made a phone call to the YSOCT and after one long conversation with Pippa James, I was convinced Reflexology was the right thing for me.

Admittedly, I like a bit of a challenge so I studied the Anatomy and Physiology course whilst pregnant. My older children were at school and I enjoyed engaging my brain and getting stuck into learning about the body. I was heavily pregnant by the time I sat the exam and I had already had a few false starts with labour, but I was determined to get the exam done before I had my baby, so I didn’t forget everything I had learnt over the last year. I think everybody was pretty relieved I made it to the end of the exam, including Pippa! A few months later I got the phone call to say that I had passed and I was ready to go with the  practical training. I would turn up to the course on occasion with zero sleep with a new-born and I was a complete wreck and often in tears.  Despite this, although it was hard work I felt a real sense of achievement at the end of each day. I have never had any experience of any Complementary therapies so I was literally starting from scratch. My tutor, Pippa James, was a hard task master with a great sense of humour and we would always have a giggle which would make me feel at ease. I felt a real sense of ‘we are all in this together’ which was always encouraging.

YSOCT limited classes to 6 students to ensure the training remained personal and we felt we all had one-to-one attention. The course is full on and I found it particular challenging despite the sleep deprivation. This was not helped by my 7 year old inadvertently deleting one of my essays from the computer! Despite all the ups and downs I made it through. I feel tremendously proud for what I have achieved and I am enjoying getting stuck into treating clients. I have set up a small treatment room in my home and I am enjoying putting my hard earned skills into practice and seeing the benefits for my clients. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing my clients switch off from the stresses of everyday life during treatments.

Here’s a link to my Facebook page so you can see what I am now doing. If you would like to book a treatment for yourself or have a chat about my experience with Reflexology, please do get in touch. If you are considering embarking on a Reflexology course with the Yorkshire School of Complementary Therapy, my advice would be to go on and do it! Good luck.

Katy’s Story.

Having always enjoyed working with people and seeking opportunities to help, “fix things” and make a difference, it’s no wonder I didn’t last long in a sales career! Since childhood, I have had regular Osteopathic treatments to help manage a long term health condition. In 2015, I encountered serious health complications and by way of divine intervention, I was pushed to re-evaluate my career and purpose. I concluded that I hated my job and wanted a career in something away from computers, desks and with actual human beings. Reflexology, literally popped into my head and would.not.leave

So, a career in Reflexology it was (despite not knowing the first thing about it!). After lots of course research, I phoned Pippa. I cannot begin to explain how wonderful and reassuring Pippa was on that phone call. And thus began my journey into the world of all things holistic. October 2015, I walked into the Yorkshire School of Complementary Therapies classroom, laden with study books, towels and a pristine white uniform. Feeling nervous (along with the other students!), together we set about getting to fumbling grips with Reflexology technique and in-depth theory. We were all incredibly grateful that the class size was fairly small, which meant that Pippa could spend more time with us individually to ensure we were getting the best guidance possible.

By April 2016, we were pros and knew the sequence and course content back to front and standing on our heads. We all passed the exam and from there, our Reflexology careers merged.

I now own Hummingbird Holistic Therapies and have never looked back. I absolutely adore what I do and am always keen to keep up to date with new techniques, research and therapies. It’s a real privilege to help people on such an individual and meaningful level, and it is so humbling to see clients get better  and still return because they love their Reflexology sessions so much.
