We have been a part of Yorkshire life since 1987 and are now into our third decade
We keep our class sizes small to ensure the highest teaching standards
Our students consistently achieve high merits and distinctions
We take a close interest in our students long after they have qualified
Yorkshire School of Complementary Therapy is the merger of two of the most established and successful ITEC schools in the North East, The Sylvia Brearley School of Therapy (est. 1987) and The York School of Complementary Medicine (est.1999). We took the decision to merge schools in 2014 in order to offer more expansive range of courses. Together we have over 40 years teaching and examining experience.
Our Aims and Objectives
Our aim is to offer high standards of vocational training. Our objective is to help every student attain a high level of proficiency in order to become a professional practitioner.
Our teaching approach is especially beneficial for the more mature student who may be apprehensive about returning to learning. Students who are worried about their ability to study are helped by the small class sizes and relaxed style of learning. They are assured of receiving the extra support and encouragement they may need to help them succeed.
Continued Student Support
After the course has finished, the support does not stop. New practitioners need support just as much after they have graduated as during their studies at the school. That is why the course tutor is only a phone call away for help and advice in those early days if there are any problems.
Continual Professional Development Workshops
There are also post graduate workshops held throughout the year where students can meet old friends and fellow practitioners whilst widening their knowledge in the field of complementary medicine.
Trusted & Experienced
YSOCT brings three decades of teaching under one roof. We offer a wide range of UK and internationally recognised courses.
Small, Intimate Classes
We believe that the real strength is the way we ensure our classes never exceed more than 6 to 8 students. This allows us to get to know you and you to get to know us. It just makes sense.
Support and Career Care
Our students can rely on our total care and encouragement during their time with us. And we are always intested in their progress afterwards, offering further ongoing training and support.
Yorkshire’s Highest Pass Rate
We pride ourselves on our students consistently achieving high exam grades. Bespoke training helps them to become confident, safe, and professional practitioners.
INTRODUCING OUR TUTORS
(B.A. Hons., PGCE, ITEC, CThA)
Philippa has been a practitioner of complementary medicine since 1994. She trained with The Crane School of Reflexology, one of the premier schools in the country, and went on to specialise in Reflexology completing many post graduate and advanced courses.
She started her teaching career in 1998 running non vocational Reflexology courses in Adult Education, and went on to found The York School Of Complementary Medicine in 1999, an ITEC accredited school.
As well as teaching vocational courses she has spoken at numerous seminars, exhibitions and on television, and run workshops in hospitals and health clinics. She also had a regular column in the Yorkshire Evening Press, under “Ask The Experts”, specialising in Complementary Therapies.
Philippa brings her many years of clinical practice into her teaching. This not only includes over 20 years in private practice, but also voluntary work in Bosnia treating the victims of war crimes; in the field of respite care specialising in Multiple Sclerosis, and as a therapist within HM prison service.
She is a very emphatic teacher who is insightful of her students needs. Her relaxed but thorough teaching style ensures that each student reaches high standards of professional excellence. Students leave her courses not only with a recognised ITEC qualification, but as confident and competent practitioners.
(ITEC Holistic Honours Diploma, CThA)
Sylvia comes from a medical family and has over 25 years of teaching experience. After leaving school, she became actively involved in the Health and Sports industry training as a Swimming Instructor and a Life Guard. Her interest in sport led her to train in Massage Anatomy and Physiology and Sports Massage. She later trained in Aromatherapy And Hot Stones Massage. She founded The Sylvia Brearley School of Therapy in 1987 and went on to become an ITEC practical examiner.
As well as many years of teaching and examining experience, Sylvia has a thriving private practice and has worked with the local hospice and Red Cross on a voluntary basis.
Professional, calm, caring, approachable and very knowledgeable in her work, Sylvia goes the extra mile to support and accommodate her students and their various needs. Her teaching approach is aptly reflected in the words of George Bernard Shaw:
” I am not a teacher
just a fellow traveler of whom you asked the way
I pointed the way ahead
Ahead of myself as well as you.”
She has a sense of fun and brings a positive learning environment to all her courses. An effective and motivational teacher, whose love and passion for complementary therapy comes through in her teaching.
